We have all heard of meditation. We have all heard about its benefits. We all know it has been proven to be one of the greatest tools to becoming more productive, calmer and more ‘you’ than ever before. Yet, most of us fear the thought of sitting still and paying close attention to our breathing. We feel this mild panic, when told to sit with our thoughts.
A few years ago, I had been part of the camp that could not dream of being still and always had an excuse for how my mind would never be blank sufficient to meditate. For me, it seemed rather odd to listen to the incessant chatter within my head. I had made the assumption that I would get uninterested if I did nothing, even if it was just for 10 minutes.
But then I noticed an analogy on yoga that made absolute sense to me, which eventually resulted in an inner voice that said – ‘ hello, why don’t you give this a shot’, and well, the rest as they say is history.
So , what was that tale that changed my brain? Well meditation is like imagining your mind as the CEO and everything your thoughts are like small tasks coming your way for VC funding. Now as the CEO mind, you are going to observe all of the thought projects and choose ones add value to your company (YOU) and hence finance it with emotions/thoughts/ideas and reject the ones that no longer serve you. You are slowly but surely, taking finish control of your mind in a soft, easy way.
So let us start with what is Meditation (a simple definition which i promise will not scare you)
Meditation is not about being a whole new person or even a better person. It is merely a training in awareness to gain a healthy sense of perspective. Throughout meditation you DO NOT have to turn out of your thoughts or feelings. You are simply spending some time watching your thoughts, without judgement. The greater you meditate, the more you are going to understand your thoughts and feelings.
Meditation is definitely awareness – when we meditate, we dedicate a certain amount of effort and time to being mindful – aware of all of your core detects.
But most importantly, meditation is NOT about draining your mind or sitting empty for hours.
I am certain you are now wondering how does meditation work without erasing ones thoughts.
Let me simplify it for you (one of the numerous ways you can meditate)
- Find a comfortable place to sit – your bed, a cushioning, on the ground – whatever feels easy for you. Sit upright and be still.
- Close your eyes plus slowly bring your attention to a meditation object – the breath, for example – now pay attention to it. Allow your mind gently settle on your breath.
- Inhale – bring awareness to the air coming in
- Breathe out – provide awareness to the breath leaving behind your body
You will likely notice that your mind is not going to settle. One moment you might notice your breath and the next moment you might be preparing your next holiday and then the following you might be re-living a previous memory. This is all flawlessly normal. It is your mind in fact. It is completely creative plus always wants itself to become heard.
Surprisingly enough, trying to stop your mind from thinking is like wanting to stop the wind – it’s impossible. In Far eastern teaching, the mind is referred to as being like a drunken goof bitten by a scorpion… just like a monkey leaps from branch to branch, therefore the mind leaps from one factor to another, constantly distracted plus busy. So , when you arrived at sit still and try to quieten your mind, you find all this manic activity and it seems huge noisy. This isn’t something new, just that you are now becoming conscious of it. You previously resided immersed in it, unaware that will such chatter was therefore constant.
If you give your mind a place to express itself, it is the first step to getting to know it plus learning to harness its power. When you feel like you have moved away from your breath, you gently but firmly ask it to come back to your breath. As you start doing this practice of bringing it back again and again, you tend to be increasingly more conscious.
In summary, meditation is not about driving the mind to be absolutely still. Rather, it’s an allowing go of resistance, associated with whatever may arise – doubt, worry, uncertainty and feeling inadequate, the limitless drama, fear and wish . Every time you find your mind drifting, daydreaming, remembering earlier times or planning ahead, just come back to now, come back to this instant. All you need do is give consideration and be with what is. Not more than that.
Remember, music needs to be played for hours to have the notes right, while in Japan it can take 12 years to learn how to arrange flowers. Getting still happens in a time, but it may take some time just before that moment finally arrives – hence the need for tolerance. With time, the mind will capture on – once you find out the peace and richness of just being present, it will become harder for you to take away.
Start with placing a timer for just a minute and then gradually build it up to 15 minutes or more, at least once a day. For me, even a few minutes of meditation makes myself feel grounded, at peace and ensures I just respond to life situations rather than being reactive. Do provide this a try, I guarantee you, you will not regret it.
